Jacksonville University nursing student Chandra Alexander, a dedicated mother to three children – daughters, 17 and 4, and a 15-year-old son – is one step closer to becoming a healthcare leader thanks to the Diversity in Health Care Scholarship from UnitedHealth Group. For Alexander, this life-changing scholarship helped alleviate the financial burden of tuition and fees, allowing her to focus on her studies while reinforcing her passion for patient care.
“It is truly an honor to receive this scholarship,” Alexander said. “I am grateful for the extra support that has helped me achieve my financial goals. Furthermore, I am happy to see efforts in place to address diversity concerns in healthcare.”
Alexander balances a demanding schedule. She began working part time last fall to accommodate her clinical and school commitments while also volunteering as a mentor for at-risk youth in Duval County. Additionally, she serves as a first responder through her church on Sundays, furthering her dedication to helping others.
Jacksonville University remains committed to preparing students for success in high-impact
fields. Through a dedicated faculty and staff, experiential learning, and industry
partnerships, the university provides students like Alexander with the resources they
need to excel. Her scholarship, which she
found through an online platform that matches students with unique opportunities,
is one of many available to aspiring healthcare professionals.
In addition to receiving financial support, Alexander was invited to share her story through a video collaboration with UnitedHealth Group, filmed on Jacksonville University’s campus. The experience allowed her to reflect on her path to nursing, from taking a high school health careers course to pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice.
“The film crew was terrific. They coached me well and made me feel comfortable sharing my story,” she said. “It is not often that I am required to talk about myself in that manner, but hearing my story made me proud of myself.”
With Jacksonville University’s support, Alexander is preparing to make a lasting impact in the healthcare field. As she continues her studies, she remains focused on providing care and service to others.
“I waited many years before deciding to go back to school,” she said. “This experience and my growth in nursing and school have all helped me realize that I am truly created to do more in healthcare.”
