A Phins Up Mentor is a distinguished professional, including alumni and community partners, who are willing to share knowledge and life experiences with their mentees.
Benefits of Becoming a Phins Up Mentor
- Ability to share one’s professional passion by providing career guidance and advice
- Serve as a listening ear to student ideas and provide feedback for students enthusiastic about their future professional goals
- Share knowledge about your career field and area(s) of expertise
- Assist students with the exploration of new fields and confirmation of current fields
- Continuously inspire drive in students to achieve goals and provide resources to do so
- Utilize career development skills to assist with student resumes, cover letters, interview/networking skills, and job/graduate program search skills
- Share potential professional contact information for student opportunities
- Expand your network through interacting with fellow mentors
- Positively impact the professional development of students in the position of a role model
Requirements to Become a Phins Up Mentor
- Be a JU alumni, community member, employer partner, or JU faculty/staff member with a strong interest in assisting Jacksonville University students with career and professional development
- Have a minimum of three years professional work experience and a bachelor’s degree
- Participate in the Phins Up Mentorship Program for at least one academic semester
- Attend at least one Phins Up Mentorship event each semester
- Communicate and/or meet with my mentee at least once per month
- Provide my mentee at least 24 hour’s notice when canceling an appointment
- Provide feedback, send status updates and participate in semesterly assessments in order to continue growth within the program
- Recognize my mentee may or may not be seeking the same career field I'm in, but will still be able to benefit from my career advice and guidance
- Ability to keep all information confidential, to act with good judgment and discretion and abide by Jacksonville University policies and procedures
- Ability and willingness to complete a brief phone interview and/or social media check by Career Management
