Reimagining Our Academic Offerings

At Jacksonville University, we plan for the future, today. That’s why we are reimagining our academic offerings to propel student success, meet market demands and ensure long-term financial sustainability. These updates reflect months of careful analysis and collaboration with our Board of Trustees, faculty and university leaders. We will continue delivering the high-quality education and individualized experience our students expect.

Our Guiding Principles

Continuing Our Commitment to Academic Excellence

Jacksonville University will continue to offer 37 of our most in-demand undergraduate majors and minors, representing the majors of 96% of our current undergraduate students. At the graduate level, we will offer 15 master’s and doctoral programs in high-demand fields across law, public policy, business, healthcare, marine science and dance. See the list of programs.

A New College for the Arts, Sciences and Humanities: Beginning May 5, 2025, the Linda Berry Stein College of Arts and Sciences will bring together disciplines from the current Stein College of Fine Arts & Humanities and the traditional College of Arts and Sciences. Led by Dean Christopher Corbo, the college will serve approximately 1,000 students in 15 fields of study, through the School of Fine Arts and Humanities, the School of Social Sciences and Education, and the School of Science and Mathematics.

Growth of Our College of Law: With its first class graduating in May 2025, Jacksonville University’s College of Law will continue to expand its programs and impact.

A First for Our Region: On track to open in fall 2026, LECOM at Jacksonville University will be the region’s first four-year medical school. Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine is investing approximately $50 million to establish this new campus at the Jacksonville University Medical Mall on the north end of campus. Learn More

Sunsetting Select Programs: Beginning in fall 2025, some low-enrollment and specialized programs will no longer be offered to new, incoming students. Every current student in these programs has a clear pathway to graduation through individualized academic planning with our Care Team, which includes representatives from the Registrar’s Office, Student Affairs, Academic Advising, Student Financial Services and Career Design & Exploration. The vast majority of these students will be able to complete their degrees exactly as planned. As a result of these updated academic offerings, approximately 41 faculty are being involuntarily separated this week. We are supporting these faculty through severance packages and connections to other resources.

A Strategic, Collaborative Approach

These updates reflect the work of dozens of leaders across campus, including our Academic Financial Task Force, made up of deans, faculty and university administrators who provided in-depth recommendations. Hundreds of hours of analysis, discussion and faculty collaboration have guided these decisions.

A Sustainable Future: Strengthening Our Financial Foundation

Jacksonville University believes in strategic evolution and smart growth. This requires periods of strategic adjusment and recalibration. Hundreds of universities across the U.S. are making similar decisions as they navigate the current landscape of higher education. Streamlining our academic infrastructure is a critical step forward in creating long-term financial sustainability for the university. A more focused academic catalogue allows the university to optimize our operations while continuing to provide a high-quality educational experience for students. By fall 2025, we expect a 10% reduction in controllable expenses across all university operations.

Fueling the Future: A Roadmap to 2030

Work is underway to develop the University’s 2025-2030 strategic framework and key priorities, which are expected to be completed this summer. Fifteen experienced committee members from across our campus community have undertaken a comprehensive approach to assess the current higher education landscape, benchmark against peers and aspirational schools, and engage hundreds of internal and external stakeholders through meetings, surveys, and individual and small-group discussions.

The final strategic plan framework and key priorities lay the foundation for colleges, departments and functions to drive toward our 2030 institutional goals with alignment, intent, purpose, unwavering focus and clarity. The Future Focused initiative reflects the insights and recommendations from the 2030 team.
