Job Summary

The Department of Dance invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance with a focus on Jazz Dance forms beginning August 2024 and continuing through the 2024-2025 academic year. This position requires a professional artist with experience in performing, teaching, creative activity, and scholarship to be successful for a one-year (two-semester) appointment.

Candidates should expect to work closely with undergraduate students and be able to communicate effectively within various platforms and modalities. Principal responsibilities include teaching, staging or choreographing works, and serving on departmental and universitywide committees. The successful candidate will be committed to teaching within a small collaborative environment and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching, mentoring, and creative activity with undergraduates.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Shared responsibility in directing, rehearsing, and producing the two mainstage dance concerts.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Must be able to teach all levels: jazz with a focus on contemporary, and/or commercial jazz.
  • Must also be able to teach at least two of the following: Tap Dance, Dance Production, Dance History (Modern and Jazz), Composition, somatic practice, dance technology, and/or dance
    entrepreneurship.
  • Serve as rehearsal assistant for guest artists in residence during the fall semester.
  • Assist production staff in training the undergraduate students in technical and backstage skills for dance productions.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Skills in instructional technology; Blackboard
  • Willing to collaborate with the School of Performing Arts faculty

Education, Certificates, Licenses, & Experience

  • MFA in Dance (or related field) from an accredited university by the start date
  • 3 years of full-time teaching experience in Dance (or related field) preferred
  • A strong record of professional dance experience preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Manual dexterity to efficiently operate a computer keyboard and other business machines
  • Adequate hearing to communicate effectively in person and virtually
  • Near vision sufficient to read written communications and computer display screens
  • Stamina to teach up to 24 hours weekly
