Introduction to the IHI Open School Chapter Network
Launched in 2008, the IHI Open School is a global learning community that supports change agents to provide the best possible care through online courses in quality, safety, and leadership, and hundreds of local Chapters around the world. Based in Cambridge, MA, IHI mobilizes teams, organizations, and nations to envision an improved healthcare future.

Mission
The IHI Open School Chapter at Jacksonville University encourages and supports innovative interprofessional collaboration to advance healthcare improvement and patient safety competencies in current and future health professionals.
Objectives
- Educate members about health care quality improvement science through IHI resources and Chapter events.
- Empower members to build an interprofessional network from other states, countries, and Chapters.
- Enhance members’ interprofessional collaborative skills through project-based learning opportunities and social activities including leadership and community organizing skills to improve community health.
- Encourage members to join or develop research initiatives and Quality Improvement (QI) practicum opportunities.
What is Quality?
The Institute of Medicine has defined quality as “the degree to which health services for individuals and populations increase the likelihood of desired health outcomes and are consistent with current professional knowledge” (Lohr, as cited by the IOM, 2001, p. 232).
What is Patient Safety?
According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) Patient Safety Network, patient safety is defined as “freedom from accidental or preventable injuries produced by medical care” (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality [AHRQ], n.d.a).
