Communication students gain valuable experience as reporters, editors, photographers, producers, directors, sales representatives and business managers for student media. Print media students find opportunities on the award-winning weekly newspaper, The Navigator, and the Riparian yearbook. Broadcast students operate the JU108 online radio station, and showcase their video talents through JU’s television production studio. FIN-TV, the campus video production organization, produces programming for a Jacksonville cable access channel and for local clients. Stipends are awarded to students selected as editors and managers of student media outlets.
Public relations students gain experience through participation in the student chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association. FPRA members produce a newsletter for the communication department, Channels, and plan and coordinate a number of events and activities including monthly luncheons, annual pro-am days and internship fairs. Annual department social events include a holiday party and an end-of-the-year celebration.
Each year, the graduating senior with the highest GPA is honored as Communication Student of the Year. In addition, outstanding students in newspaper/magazine journalism, radio and television, public relations and advertising and oral communication are recognized for their accomplishments and service.
