Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the
story of a small town girl, Millie Dillmount, who comes to New York City to
marry for money instead of love – a thoroughly modern aim in 1922, when women were
just entering the workforce. Millie soon begins to take delight in the flapper lifestyle,
but problems arise when she checks into a hotel owned by the leader of a slavery ring
in China. The style of the musical is comic pastiche.

Based on the play by Elmer Rice with
lyrics by Langston Hughes and music by Kurt Weill, Street Scene embodies themes
of love, loss, and survival in this emotional, moving story about families
living in a multi-ethnic tenement in New York City in 1946. Directed by
Kimberly Beasley, Street Scene will feature talented JU singers and actors. The
beautiful and lively score full of classical and jazz idioms will be played by
the Jacksonville University Orchestra conducted by Dr. Marguerite Richardson.
