JU’s Service Learning Performance Ensemble is an auditioned group of students that use their
talents in the spirit of community service in and around Jacksonville,
Florida. Under the direction of
Kimberly Beasley, singers, instrumentalists, actors, and dancers program events
with innovative music incorporating all styles of music and various
combinations of performers. In
addition to performing, students also work in after school programs teaching
children the basics of music and performing, cultivating a love for all types of music.

This course was designed as
a result of receiving a Service Learning Grant as part of the Center for
Teaching and Learning activities at Jacksonville University. Students individually and collaboratively
assess educational or social service needs in an academic and community context
as well as developing a musical program that suits the needs of the service
partner. They present this program
for the partner and then reflect on their experience through writing.
Because community service is
part of the Jacksonville University experience, music students are especially
excited about contributing using their talents through this ensemble. This course provides students with real
world performing experience in addition to teaching them values of and skills
in entrepreneurship, creative programming, collaboration, and event organization.
