Donna Ogle IRA 2011SMALL.jpgWho: The event is open to educators and anyone in the community interested in gaining an inside look at how classroom teachers engage children in the critical area of reading. Keynote speaker Dr. Donna Ogle, a professor in the Reading and Language Department of the National-Louis University, created the renowned K-W-L (What we Know, What we Want to Know and What we Learned) teaching strategy, which is widely used across North America. Full bios of the keynote and session speakers are included in the attached program.
Why: In today’s K-12 education world, it is critical that teachers share their expertise and talents in making differences for children's reading outcomes beyond standardized test scores. Additionally, the conference will focus on the importance of reading instruction and the field of reading education because teacher expertise in this skilled area is what makes differences in children's literacy futures. Details of the launch of JU's new Master's Degree in Reading Education program, whose first cohort begins this summer, will be offered to attendees. To better support private-, public- and community-based efforts to help children with reading, JU plans to become a reading instruction hub and support system for teachers who want to study reading and learn more about the reading process, reading development, and effective reading instructional strategies.
