JU Student Veterans of America holding first 5K Color Run Nov. 9 to honor those who served
What: Jacksonville University Veterans Day 5K Color Run.
When: 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9.
Where: Jacksonville University, 2800 University Blvd. N., Jacksonville, FL 32211.
Details: To honor local veterans and raise awareness and funding for JU student veterans, Jacksonville University’s Student Veterans of America chapter is holding a Color Run. In a fun twist to conventional races, the hundreds of expected participants will be doused from head to toe with different colors at each kilometer. Veterans and non-veterans alike are invited to take part in the weekend, as participants or spectators. All proceeds from the run will help fund JU student veteran services, including helping with a new Student Veterans Center in the Founders Building on the JU campus. This center is being dedicated to support JU’s student veterans, the second largest student group on campus, at more than 300. It will provide an area for them to study, network and support each other. The room will be unveiled Nov. 7.
Men and women who have served their country often find it difficult to re-enter civilian life and the academic world. The Student Veterans of America is a national organization made up of chapters around the country that help veterans with this transition. These chapters are run by student veterans, individuals who at one time or another were active-duty military members. The JU chapter began in 2012, with its main focus to create a family-like environment for veterans attending Jacksonville University.
