Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown called the creation of a Beta Gamma Sigma chapter at Jacksonville University a “vote of confidence that very few universities worldwide receive” as he accepted the chapter’s first Honoree Award.
“There is no reason when people talk about Duke or Notre Dame or Princeton, they aren’t making comparisons to Jacksonville University,” Brown told an audience on hand Friday, March 2, to witness establishment of the chapter and induction of its first members. “One thing I’ve learned at JU – our graduates don’t half-step. We go out and get things done.”
Brown, a double graduate of JU, was honored for his “significant contributions to the Jacksonville community,” according to Interim Davis College of Business Dean William Crosby. Along with the mayor’s honor, three juniors, 21 seniors, 28 masters students, one administrator and nine faculty were inducted into the chapter.
“You are about to become part of an elite group,” Crosby told them. “You represent the best of the best, not just of JU but worldwide.”
Election to lifetime membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest honor a business student can receive, according to the society.
Jacksonville University’s Davis College of Business recently achieved accreditation of its business programs by AACSB International. As a result, the school established the chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma. Only the best business students in the world, and the professionals who earned the distinction of “the Best in Business” during their academic careers, can claim membership in Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS).
