Jacksonville, Fla.—Dr. Don Capener has been named Dean of the Davis College of Business (DCOB) at Jacksonville University. His appointment was announced today by Dr. Lois Becker, senior vice president of academic affairs, and President Dr. Kerry D. Romesburg. Capener will officially begin on July 1, 2012.
"We are excited to have such a respected business leader and proven higher-education administrator join us,” said Romesburg. “We expect the DCOB to build on the momentum of earning international accreditation last year and to flourish under his leadership.”
Capener comes to JU from Monmouth College in Illinois where he was a key member of their Political Economy and Commerce department for the past decade and more recently as vice president for strategic planning and chief marketing officer. Prior to his work at Monmouth, he was a senior vice president and director of client services for Euro RSCG 4D (formerly Blau) in Chicago and San Francisco.
“As an entrepreneur, I can sense when a great organization is at the tipping point of even greater success. With DCOB’s faculty assets, support from the business community, and AACSB accreditation, the ingredients are all in place,” said Capener. “I look forward to joining such a dynamic, forward-thinking faculty and leadership team at JU.”
A successful entrepreneur who founded Above the Rim, an athletic apparel company that was later sold to Reebok in 1993, Capener brings an abundance of real-world experience to the DCOB. Having lived and worked in Japan, he also brings a broad network of international knowledge and contacts to his new role.
Capener started his career as an international advertising manager on the Colgate Palmolive advertising business in 1985. He excelled in various business development roles and later as an advertising agency CEO. As an Emmy award winning advertising professional, he co-founded and led large multi-disciplinary teams as the chief marketing officer at Above The Rim/Reebok, and Netcentives, Inc. in the Bay Area.
He directed national efforts for Visa’s promotional campaigns such as Visa Rewards at Frankel in Chicago and San Francisco. He rose to managing account director of what is now Leo Burnett's San Francisco office in 1995. He currently consults for a number of small to mid-sized companies and serves as board member and senior advisor to several start-ups companies.
In 2011, Capener earned a Doctor of International Management from the International School of Management in Paris, France. He earned his Master of Business Administration from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Arizona and his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University.
