The Spring Career Expo — a signature Jacksonville University event that connects students with prospective employers — is next week.
So, this week, JU’s Career Development Center is doing something new: It is helping students prepare for their moment of truth — their first face-to-face encounters with prospective employers.
With the help of some employers who will be at the Career Expo, this week’s daily “Check Yourself Before Your Wreck Yourself” campaign is offering assistance to students with resume preparation, dressing professionally, researching employers and even on appropriate hand-shaking techniques. The activities are taking place during lunchtime at the Davis College of Business, Kinne Center and Gooding Building.
“We’re promoting the expo and also doing what we can to make sure the students are fully prepared” for their encounters with employers, said Jessica Swick, JU’s employer relations coordinator.
This week’s “Check Yourself” activities are fun, too: On Wednesday, students who successfully identified corporate logos were entered into a raffle to win JU Bookstore certificates.
Open to all students, the Career Expo is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13 in the Kinne Center. Fifty-four employers will be on hand seeking to fill internships, part-time jobs and full-time jobs; students can obtain the list of employers by logging onto PHIN Connect on the My JU Portal. PHIN Connect bridges the student-employer communication gap by enabling students to access part-time and full-time employment and internship postings, employer profiles and contacts, career development resources and career event information.
The Career Development Center also supports the career ambitions and growth of JU students and alumni through individual consulting and counseling, career assessments and workshops, information sessions, on-campus recruiting, job and internship postings, and mock interviews.
