A107.jpgWELCOME to the new Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Jacksonville University (JU). At JU we are dedicated to distinction in undergraduate and graduate education, clinical education and translational research opportunities in speech-language pathology.

Our newly developed program in the College of Health Sciences is focused on preparing student to join the community of professionals who provide exemplary services to a diverse population of individuals.  The faculty and staff are dedicated our program and the dissemination of information to all academic and community partners.

With regard to the undergraduate program, our primary mission is to provide a core curriculum that prepares students for advanced study in speech-language pathology and/or to provide students with a broad liberal arts education.  The undergraduate curriculum emphasizes the principles and applications of knowledge in both healthy and disordered communication as a natural and social science. The undergraduate 
major will ensure that each student receives a diverse background in speech-language-pathology,           audiology, and the basic sciences in speech and hearing. 

 
The Master’s SLP is being designed for those students planning careers as speech-language pathologists with a primary goal to develop professionals who are knowledgeable about and skilled in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of speech, language, and swallowing disorders with emphasis on the practice of medical speech-language pathology.  Our application for accreditation is pending.  Our state mission for the curriculum we are preparing for our CAA site visit states:
 
"That the primary focus is on preparing students to become professional speech-language pathologists. The curriculum is based on the 9 major areas of knowledge and skills that are delineated by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Students must demonstrate knowledge and skills in these nine areas in order to qualify for certification by ASHA. The curriculum of the MS SLP program at Jacksonville University will include the following components to: 1) insure that the curriculum is consistent with the mission and goals of the program and, 2) provide adequate opportunities for students to develop knowledge and skills in accordance with ASHA certification requirements:"
 
o   Academic courses offer comprehensive coverage of major areas of clinical practice.
o   Specialized clinical courses that enable students to focus upon specific areas of clinical practice.
o   Academic courses that enable students to develop knowledge about the etiology and characteristics of major disorders.  
o   Academic and clinical courses that enable students to develop knowledge and skills needed to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat an array of communication disorders.
o   Academic and clinical courses that help students gain knowledge about an array of professional issues. We will provide hands-on learning activities that enable students to become proficient in a range of clinical skills, as well as oral and written communication in professional settings.
